From March 1, 2021 single-use plastic straws, stirrers and cutlery including bioplastic, were prohibited in South Australia.

From March 1, 2022 Expanded Polystyrene (or EPS) clamshell containers, plates, bowls or cups were banned from sale or distribution. The ban does not include polystyrene used in packaging around electronics like fridges or computers, or in the packaging of fruit and vegetables, or fish and meat. Polystyrene products can still be manufactured in South Australia for sale interstate or overseas, but they cannot be sold, distributed or given away in South Australia.

From March 1, 2022 any products made from oxo-degradable plastic were also banned. Oxo-degradable plastic products will also be prohibited from sale, supply or distribution. Unlike the ban on polystyrene, it will also be an offence to manufacture or produce oxo-degradable plastic in South Australia. Oxo-degradable plastic products have additives which enable the plastic to break down into tiny fragments (‘microplastics’) which do not completely decompose.

From September 1, 2023 single-use plastic bowls, plates and plastic-stemmed cotton buds, with some exemptions, were also prohibited from sale, supply or distribution. Also plastic pizza savers were prohibited from sale, supply or distribution.
